Tile Adhesive Selection & Application Guide
Selecting the correct polymer-modified adhesive grade ensures structural bond strength, prevents debonding, and accommodates thermal movement across vitrified tiles, large porcelain slabs, and outdoor substrates.
Crucial Technical Rule: Never Use Traditional Cement-Sand Mortar on Porcelain
Modern vitrified and porcelain tiles feature an ultra-dense structure with near-zero water absorption (< 0.5%). Traditional grey cement bonds mechanically through capillary suction; without porosity, cement cannot penetrate the tile, leading to hollow sounds, debonding, and floor pop-ups. Always use polymer-fortified, factory-premixed tile adhesives.
International Adhesive Grades (EN 12004 / IS 15477)
Match your tile dimension and application substrate with the correct classification tier.
Standard Ceramic Adhesive
Normal Setting Cementitious Adhesive- Best For: Small porous ceramic wall and floor tiles up to 30x60 cm.
- Substrates: Internal cement plaster, concrete floor screed.
- Water Absorption: For tiles with > 3% absorption.
- Limitation: Unsuitable for fully vitrified tiles, slabs, or exterior walls.
Standard Porcelain & GVT
High-Performance Polymer-Modified- Best For: 60x60 cm, 60x120 cm, 80x80 cm Glazed Vitrified Tiles (GVT/PGVT).
- Features: Extended open time (E) & slip resistance (T).
- Substrates: Internal floors, internal dry walls, and heated screeds.
- Bond Strength: ≥ 1.0 N/mm² tensile adhesion.
Large Format Slabs & Exterior
Deformable & Highly Flexible- Best For: 80x160 cm, 120x180 cm, 120x240 cm Slabs & Balconies.
- Flexibility (S1): Absorbs thermal expansion and structural deflections.
- Substrates: Exterior facades, tile-on-tile renovation, wet areas.
- Deformation: Lateral movement tolerance ≥ 2.5 mm.
Mega Slabs & Facades
Highly Deformable & Heavy Duty- Best For: 160x320 cm Slabs, high-rise exterior cladding, industrial flooring.
- Flexibility (S2): Maximum flexibility against extreme thermal shocks.
- Substrates: High-traffic commercial, metal/drywall framing, facades.
- Deformation: Lateral movement tolerance ≥ 5.0 mm.
Notched Trowel Sizing & Bed Thickness
| Tile Format / Application | Recommended Trowel Notch | Back Buttering | Est. Consumption (kg/m²) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Ceramic Tiles (≤ 30x30 cm) | 6 mm x 6 mm Square Notch | Not Required | 2.5 – 3.0 kg/m² |
| Standard Porcelain Tiles (60x60 cm) | 8 mm x 8 mm or 10 mm Square Notch | Recommended | 4.0 – 4.5 kg/m² |
| Large Formats (60x120 cm, 80x160 cm) | 10 mm x 10 mm or Slant Notch | Mandatory (1–2 mm bed) | 5.5 – 6.5 kg/m² |
| Porcelain Slabs (120x240 cm, 160x320 cm) | 12 mm to 15 mm Slant/Euro Notch | Mandatory (100% full coverage) | 7.0 – 8.5 kg/m² |
| 20 mm Outdoor Pavers (60x60, 60x120 cm) | 12 mm Square or Semi-Round Notch | Mandatory | 7.5 – 9.0 kg/m² |
Mixing & Setting Guidelines
Water-First Principle
Always pour the measured clean water into the mixing bucket first, then slowly add the powder adhesive. This avoids clumping and unmixed dry pockets at the bottom.
Mechanical Stirring
Mix with an electric spiral paddle mixer at low speed (300–400 RPM) for 3–5 minutes until a smooth, lump-free paste is achieved. Do not hand-mix with a trowel.
The 5-Minute Slaking Time
Allow the mixed paste to stand undisturbed ("slake") for 4 to 5 minutes so the polymers fully hydrate. Briefly remix for 30 seconds before application. Never add extra water after slaking.
Straight Ridges & Air Release
Comb the adhesive in straight parallel lines (never swirl or circle). Press the tile and slide it perpendicular to the ridges using a rubber mallet to collapse air pockets and ensure 100% adhesive contact.
